Heterogeneous individual motility biases group composition in a model of aggregating cells

چکیده

Aggregative life cycles are characterized by alternating phases of unicellular growth and multicellular development. Their multiple, independent evolutionary emergence suggests that they may have coopted pervasive properties single-celled ancestors. Primitive aggregates, where coordination mechanisms were less efficient than in extant aggregative microbes, must faced high levels conflict between different co-aggregating populations. Such conflicts within a body manifest the differential reproductive output cells types. Here, we study how heterogeneity cell motility affects aggregation process creates mismatch composition population self-organized groups active adhesive particles. We model as self-propelled particles describe plane starting from dispersed configuration. Inspired cycle organisms such Dictyostelium discoideum or Myxococcus xanthus , whose interact for fixed duration before onset chimeric development, finite-time configurations identical binary mixes. show co-aggregation results three types frequency-dependent biases, one which is associated to evolutionarily stable coexistence with motility. propose heuristic explanation observations, based on competition delayed slower detachment faster Unexpectedly, despite complexity non-linearity system, biases can be largely predicted behavior two corresponding homogenous This points possibly important factor driving facultatively life-cycles.

A recurrent connectionist model of group biases.

Major biases and stereotypes in group judgments are reviewed and modeled from a recurrent connectionist perspective. These biases are in the areas of group impression formation (illusory correlation), group differentiation (accentuation), stereotype change (dispersed vs. concentrated distribution of inconsistent information), and group homogeneity. All these phenomena are illustrated with well-...

Aggregating Individual Models of Decision-Making Processes

When faced with a difficult decision, it would be nice to have access to a model that shows the essence of what others did in the same situation. Such a model should show what, and in which sequence, needs to be done so that alternatives can be correctly determined and criterions can be carefully considered. To make it trustworthy, the model should be mined from a large number of previous insta...

investigating the feasibility of a proposed model for geometric design of deployable arch structures

deployable scissor type structures are composed of the so-called scissor-like elements (sles), which are connected to each other at an intermediate point through a pivotal connection and allow them to be folded into a compact bundle for storage or transport. several sles are connected to each other in order to form units with regular polygonal plan views. the sides and radii of the polygons are...
